Durham is a picturesque cathedral city nestled along the river Wear in the North East. Its stunning castle and dramatic cathedral are the largest examples of Norman architecture in England – and the two have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.

It's a fantastic city to visit and one that you won't forget in a hurry.

Better still, it's very accessible and easy to get around. Whether you're a local or you've just landed on the tarmac, its considerate road network means there are countless places to explore by car.

To help you get started on your journey around Durham, take a look at some of the best things to see and do around Durham – all reachable by car.

For families

1. Hall Hill Farm

Rated number one in Trip Advisor's "Things to do in Durham",
Hall Hill Farm is a great choice for young families.

Located near the border of the beautiful North Pennines, Hall Hill Farm offers a great excuse to burn some energy while still enjoying Durham's scenic charm. The farm offers sledges, giant bouncy pillows and outdoor play equipment, as well as lots of chances to meet adorable animals.

The farm is a short drive from Lanchester, has onsite parking and can be easily accessed via the B6296.

2. Infinite Air

If the English weather isn't on your side, why not head indoors and let the family go wild at Infinite Air trampoline park?

The park boasts more than 16,000 square feet of trampolines, as well as tumble tracks, dodgeball courts and a brand new tots area for little ones. Yes – Infinite Air could make for the perfect way to wear the kids out while making fun memories.

Located in Belmont Business Park, Infinite Air can be reached along the A690. It's just a stone's throw from Durham city centre.

For nature lovers

3. Seaham Beach

If you're travelling to Durham, you don't want to miss out on its incredible coastlines. Seaham Beach is one of the best.

Take a stroll and hunt for rock pools along the one-mile stretch of sandy beach – or take in the beauty from above as you roam Seaham's clifftop walkways.

And don't forget to meander through the charming seaside town after you've explored its shoreline.

Simply take the B1287 to reach Seaham, where there's parking aplenty.

4. Durham University Botanic Garden

If you're looking for something picturesque in the city, then head towards the outskirts of Durham to the university's
Botanic Garden.

The 10-hectare gardens are surrounded by mature woodlands and have a whole range of expertly landscaped spaces to explore.

Beautiful in all seasons, the gardens are a wonderful place to visit all year round. Take the A177 South out of the centre and head down Hollingside Lane to the ample car park beside the garden.

For explorers

5. Castle Eden Dene

Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve
has a special kind of magic – it's home to a wild woodland that's 10,000 years old.

The reserve stretches across 221 hectares and hides a spectacular array of cliffs and gorges.

Designated as an area of Special Scientific Interest, the dene is also home to many birds, plants and mammals, such as roe deer, rabbits and foxes.

The reserve is clearly signposted along the A19 and offers car parking for visitors.

6. High Force

Drive towards the North Pennines and you're in for a treat. Not only will it be one of the most scenic journeys you'll ever take, but if you head towards Raby Castle you'll find
High Force waterfall.

Located at Forest-in-Teesdale, the stunning 70-foot cascade of water is a spectacle that attracts sightseers from far and wide.

While surrounded by beautiful woodland, the waterfall itself is only a few minutes walk from High Force Hotel, where you can buy tickets for your visit.

The North Pennines is also the UK's darkest mainland Area of Outstanding National Beauty – so don't forget to take a nighttime drive and stop to soak up the stars. If you're very lucky, you'll even see the northern lights. They're sometimes visible from late September to March.

You can find High Force by driving the B6277 and following the River Tees.

For history enthusiasts

7. Durham Castle and Cathedral

A visit to Durham wouldn't be complete without a visit to the city's famous
castle and cathedral. The two have earned the title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to their incredible history and architectural importance.

Take a guided tour of Durham Castle to see its collection of more than 250 paintings, marvel at the assortment of arms and armour and learn about the people who have lived, studied and worked there over the years.

Only a short walk away, you'll find Durham Cathedral: a place steeped in history. You can, once again, book a guided tour of the site to get the most out of your visit.

On the tour, you'll discover the cathedral's beauty while learning about its origins – like how it was founded by wandering monks. You can even climb the 325-step spiral staircase inside the main tower. At the top, you'll be rewarded with incredible views of the city.

To get there, follow signs for Durham city centre. Here, you can take your pick from plenty of places to park.

To unwind

8. The Ginger Dog

If you're ready to put your feet up after a busy day, here's some good news: Durham is blessed with many charming pubs and breweries.

The Ginger Dog

Promising a "warm welcome, a great atmosphere [and] most of all fantastic food", the Ginger Dog is the perfect place to recharge after a day's sightseeing.

Head down the A1(M) towards Coxhoe and you'll find this gem along the high street.
